Forsvarets Museer (The Norwegian Armed Forces Museums) is responsible for preserving, documenting, and communicating Norway's military heritage and defense history.
It consists of the main museum, Forsvarsmuseet (The Defense Museum) at Akershus Fortress in Oslo, along with several other museums across the country.
Internal studies from 2017 and 2019 concluded that Forsvarets Museer did not meet the standards for a modern museum organization. As a result, we were tasked, in collaboration with FRD, to conduct a feasibility study for the revitalization of Akershus and Oscarsborg Fortresses.
The goal was to create a strategy for the renewal of these two fortresses and to relocate the Forsvarsmuseum. The overall aim was to establish a sustainable cultural institution with a clear identity, increased visitor numbers, and a distinct purpose.
Additionally, we were asked to develop a communication and presentation plan for the feasibility study to facilitate a broad public discussion about how the fortresses should be integrated into the urban landscape
Through a series of workshops and in-depth site visits to the fortresses, we gathered insights from experts, historians, and fortress guides. We also conducted location analyses, object studies, stakeholder mapping, concept development, and historical analysis.
This information served as the foundation to examine the current visitor experience at Akershus Fortress and create a strategy for renewal.
The result of the project is a comprehensive strategy for the renewal of Akershus and Oscarsborg Fortresses. This strategy outlines one possible development scenario and a vision for the future. It is presented in a detailed report and brought to life on the website akershusfestning.info.
The website is designed as an engaging narrative, allowing users to explore a renewed visitor experience at the fortresses. Utilizing tools such as scrollytelling, sound, and interactive maps, the site offers an immersive and engaging journey through the proposed renewal.
"Try Dig has been an invaluable partner in this process, bringing unique expertise in strategy, communication, and presentation that has laid the foundation for a new, sustainable cultural institution with a clear identity and the potential for increased visitor numbers.
We are proud to have worked with Try Dig to generate a broad public debate on how the fortresses can be integrated into the cityscape and how they can become even more important cultural assets for future generations."
